WinZip Task
You can download an evaluation copy of WinZip 8.0 from www.winzip.com. If you like the program and use it regularly, they request you pay a small fee for the program.
Compressed (zipped) documents/folders can be either self-extracting (not requiring a de-compression program like WinZip to open) or compressed documents/folders requiring a de-compression program to open them. With WinZip you can open compressed documents/folders or you can compress them for your own use. Compressing documents or folders can save you space on your hard drive, or can be compressed and stored in another medium such as a Zip Drive for backup purposes.
The following is a practice exercise to demonstrate how to use WinZip.
Create Folder
Create a new folder on desktop named Zip Test
Copy a folder (e.g., Level 3 from C:/My Documents/Access/Level 3) to the Zip Test folder
Right-click on the Level 3 folder in the Zip Test folder
Click on Add to Zip
Click on the I Agree button in WinZip’s terms of agreement window
Click the Add button (leave default name and path). This will create a compressed folder with the same folder name (Level 3.zip) with a new zip icon within the Zip Test folder. WinZip displays each document’s original size, ratio of compression, and packed (compressed) size
Close WinZip. Observe the new compressed Level 3.zip folder in the Zip Test folder
Delete Level 3 folder from the Zip Test Folder
To Extract
Double-click on the compressed Level 3.zip folder with the zip icon in the Zip Test folder
Click on the I Agree button in WinZip’s terms of agreement window
Click the Extract Button on WinZip’s Toolbar
In the Extract window, select the path where you wish to extract the zipped documents. Select the Zip Test folder Icon in the Folders/Drives pane (middle of window). This puts the path in the Extract To drop down (top left). Use the appropriate heck Box Options if necessary: o Overwrite Existing Folder o Skip Older Files o Use Folder Names
Click the Extract Button in the Extract window (to right)
Close WinZip
The files from Level 3.zip are extracted (decompressed) in the Zip Test folder back as the Level 3 folder.
